Work Hard. Play Hard.
The summarization of who I am is wrapped up in the belief that a person's past makes them who they are today. I was raised on a farm in Appomattox, VA learning the relationship of hard work to success as well as the integrity to know the difference between right and wrong. My father was a strong influence on my career. For example, his affiliation with Columbia/HCA provided me a healthcare heritage that I commonly refer to as "being born in a hospital and being there ever since." Commonly, we built a lake cabin and remodeled a historic civil war home providing my passion for real estate and property.
I am lucky to have had multiple and diverse experiences because my instincts and business acumen are closely tied to prior real life situations. This journey has blessed me with a novel of hard and insightful lessons into people, company, executive, and industry dynamics. As such, these lessons have equipped me with many unique talents and diverse skillsets required to manage people and the contextual insight to visualize future ramifications of today's tough decisions.
Professionally, I have always deployed a consultative approach to any job, initiative, or project. I enjoy the thrill of the sales cycle and have mentored many direct reports to become "Top Gun" salespeople, like myself. I am well-equipped as a new business "starting pitcher" transposing vision into execution and then relying on my natural leadership abilities to guide startup projects or companies through the fragile incubation period. I am not afraid of detail or of rolling up my sleeves because I won’t ask anyone to do something I wouldn’t do myself. Finally, I have never been defined by my job title because, as Zig Ziglar said, “The way you get out of a job you don’t like is to do it so extraordinarily well that nobody can afford to keep you in that position.
I possess a vast knowledge of IT topics having written, or edited, over 150 research notes after establishing META Group's Healthcare IT Strategies Advisory Service. This writing skill has enabled me to utilize superior writing, presentation and research skills to conclusively analyze information and formulate vision into strategy. As a result, I have been an accoladed keynote speaker, presenter, and panelist for national healthcare conferences, symposiums, and trade shows. Plus, this skillset was heavily leaned upon during my 2018 Congressional US House of Representatives campaign.
My professional goal is simply to make a difference in a team environment and to be rewarded appropriately. I have been blessed with a unique sales, marketing, business development and research background equipping me with the tools and the drive to direct organizations and initiatives towards a successful, impactful and profitable result. In addition, my electronic “rolodex” of C-Suite contacts provides me a constant network of validation and opportunity.
A balanced individual puts as much energy into their personal life as their professional life. I have been lucky to have been born with a zest for new experiences and entertaining. My passion is sailing and, even though I no longer own my 40' sloop, I am looking for a new boat. However, I frequently charter in the Caribbean (BVIs are my favorite destination) and sail in Regattas. I annually charter a catamaran with several of my closest friends, family members or well-deserving employees. Nothing revitalizes creativity and energy more than enjoying a (Insert Mt. Gay Rum & tonic, Dos Equis or Cabernet) while watching an orange sunset with the rhythmic exchange of pinging halyards and scavenging seagulls while Jimmy Buffett, Kito Rymer or Bob Marley summarizes your emotions through melodic syncopation.
I have always had music in my life and was a professional drummer at an early age. Therefore, I am currently trying to learn to play the Steel Drums. I enjoyed running and still try to limp through an occasional 10K, 10M or 1/2 Marathon always finishing in the top 25% of my age bracket. Due to the pounding on my knees, I have taken up biking. I enjoy outdoor building projects such as arbors, decks, Tiki bars or simply digging holes somewhere. Finally, I enjoy time with friends or simply entertaining while watching Washington Commanders (RedSkins) games or Washington Nationals) baseball game. Armed with a capacity to create jobs and grow revenue, in 2018, I ran for US House of Representatives in NC Congressional District 1. Even though unsuccessful, I still have my eye on another run to serve my community and country!
